Why I Became an Atheist 01 – Introduction

This post is part of a series

One of the many books I am reading as research for my own book is John Loftus’ Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity. I expected it to be on of the more challenging books to faith, but so far, I’ve found it a little strewn with straw men of one sort of the other.

Not that Loftus doesn’t know Christianity – he’s certainly familiar with the various philosophic and theological discussions, but sometimes I feel that he misrepresents the emphasis of orthodoxy by replacing it with some of the foibles of modern day Christians.

While I laud his effort to be of comfort and instruction to those in transition out of faith, as I myself intend to do in my book, I think he is more focused on what’s wrong with Christianity than the actual journey itself. That’s okay, but I want to try to be a little less specific in some ways.

I am going to blog my way through John’s book.  So here’s to our journey through John’s journey.
